Wilgerbosdrift’s promising sire Fire Away continues to make a big impression, with the son of War Front churning out winners all over South Africa. Fire Away was at it again over the weekend, with two of his three-year-olds son making big impressions.
On Friday, Fire Away colt My Best Shot caught the eye when storming home from the back of the field to win the eighth and final race at Fairview impressively. Under Sean Veale, the Alan Greeff trained colt unleashed a devastating turn of foot which propelled My Best Shot into the lead and he powered away to score cosily by a neck.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, the promising My Best Shot has now won three of his last five starts, with the Fire Away colt having finished a close up third, beaten less than half a length, in the Listed Champion Juvenile Cup last season.
The jockey said after the race that My Best Shot, “Has got everything, he has the looks, he has the action.”
My Best Shot, who has won or placed in seven of his eight starts, is out of the Fort Wood mare Gypsy Madonna.
The following day, Fire Away three-year-old Confederate romped home to break his maiden impressively at Turffontein on Saturday.
Making just his second start, having finished second on debut, the Fabian Habib trained colt outclassed his field with Confederate landing the Play Soccer 6,10 and 13 Maiden Plate (1600m) by two and three quarter lengths.
Confederate, who looks to have the scope to build on this win, was bred by Moutonshoek.
