Wilgerbosdrift’s promising young sire Buffalo Bill Cody has made a very pleasing start to his stud career with five of his first 11 first-crop runners having all won.
His principal flagbearer, however, this season has been the very speedy colt Pistol Pete.
The latter made it four wins from just six starts when he made all to win at Turffontein on Sunday.
Under a confident ride from regular rider Calvin Habib, the Tony Peter trained Pistol Pete was always prominent in Sunday’s TAB Telebet 0861 000 822 Juvenile Plate (1160m).
The colt showed plenty of courage when challenged by favourite Bjorn Ironside and dug down deep to score by three-parts of a length.
It was a fine performance by Pistol Pete, who was conceding 4kgs to the promising runner up.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Pistol Pete had won his first three starts by an aggregate of nearly 12 lengths, with his wins including a three and a quarter length triumph in the Listed HKJC World Pool Event 6 April Storm Bird Stakes.
The classy Pistol Pete, who is out of the Tiger Ridge mare Oklahoma Sky, was a R380 000 buy from the 2023 Cape Yearling Sale.
His sire Buffalo Bill Cody is currently South Africa’s second Leading First Season Sire for 2023-2024.
