Friday filly double for Hawwaam

Wilgerbosdrift’s five time G1 winning sire Hawwaam has been in fine form of late, and the champion son of Silvano enjoyed more success at Fairview on Friday.
Hawwaam fillies Obsidian Star and Homing Pigeon both caught the eye when winning their respective races on Friday and both look capable of building on their latest wins.

Promising two-year-old Obsidian Star made it two wins from just three starts when she won the Welcome To Nelson Mandela Bay Maiden Juvenile Plate (1400m).
Under Chase Maujean, the Sharon Kotzen trained filly powered home to make it back to backs with a one and a quarter length triumph.

Runner up on debut, the Volmoed Stud bred Obsidian Star races for Messrs SP Mootien, K Jukhoop, Vikash Kandoo, M Christmas, BS Tobias, GM Kotzen, Sharon Kotzen Racing (Pty) Ltd & SA Punters Forum Syndicate (Pty) Ltd.

Obsidian Star, who is out of the National Emblem mare Eternal Sunshine, was a R300 000 buy from the 2025 National Yearling Sale.
She is one of seven two-year-old winners, from 11 juvenile runners, for Hawwaam this season.

Champion Hawwaam is also the sire of the useful three-year-old Homing Pigeon. The latter, who has been entered for the Listed East Cape Derby, made it two wins from her last three starts when running out a courageous winner of the Racing Today Classified Stakes.
Ridden to victory by Richard Fourie, the sophomore is trained by Alan Greeff.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift (for whom she races) and Mauritzfontein, Homing Pigeon is out of the Declaration Of War mare Pigeon Post.

Her sire Hawwaam hails from one of the hottest families around, with his relatives including such recent graded stakes winners Kingdundee and Princess Of Gaul, with his three-parts brother Ferryman having also recently won.
