FOURTH WINNER FOR FIRE AWAY

Wilgerbosdrift’s blue blooded young stallion Fire Away has made a very promising start with his first two-year-old runners this season, and the son of War Front came up with a fourth first crop winner when his daughter Marshmallow scored a surprise win in the first race at Fairview on Friday afternoon.

Making just her second start, the Juan Nel trained filly made a mockery of her 66-1 starting price when getting up to land Friday’s Welcome To Nelson Mandela Bay Maiden Juvenile Plate (Fillies) (1200m) in game fashion.

Under a strong ride from Chase Maujean, Marshmallow fought out a ding-dong finish with eventual runner up Amazing Colours which saw Marshmallow prevail by a neck.

It was another two and a half lengths back to third place getter Back For More.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Marshmallow is out of the Var mare Fudge.

The filly was a R110 000 buy from the 2022 Cape Yearling Sale.
She is the fourth first crop winner for her sire Fire Away, with Fire Away also sire of eye catching early winners Luna Halo, Except Temptation and Fire ‘N Flames. The latter recently became his sire’s first black type horse when he finished second, beaten just half a length, in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes.

Fire Away’s promising daughter Luna Halo, a close up fourth in the recent Bloodstock SA Sales Cup (Fillies), is one of no fewer than four daughters of Fire Away entered in the upcoming Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery.
