Wilgerbosdrift’s promising young stallion Fire Away has had another good week, with the son of War Front having supplied winners at Fairview, Hollywoodbets Greyville and Turffontein in the past few days.

Of Fire Away’s five latest runners, three have won impressively and Fire Away continues to go from strength to strength.

Fire Away’s first success this week came when his three-year-old daughter Duellona romped home to a facile win at Fairview on Tuesday afternoon.

Under Calvin Habib, the Gavin Smith trained Duellona stormed home to break her maiden by an emphatic six and a half lengths.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift& Mauritzfontein, Duellona had finished second last time out.
The filly is out of the Arcano mare Folk Law.

Fire Away struck again the very next day when his son King’s Island ran out a convincing winner of the third race run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday.
Trained by Stuart Ferrie, the gelded three-year-old sauntered home to shed his maiden by nearly two lengths.

Out of the Tiger Ridge mare Limerick Ridge, King’s Island (who has a half-sister (Lot 84) on offer at the 2024 Cape Yearling Sale) had finished second and fourth in his two starts prior to Wednesday’s win.

King’s Island was bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein.
Fire Away’s winning streak continued at Turffontein the following day when his Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred daughter Duenna made it back to back wins with a courageous victory over 1450m.

Under a strong ride from Trent Mayhew, the Stuart Pettigrew trained filly got up in the shadow of the post to win Thursday’s FM 76 Handicap by a short head.
Now a three time winner, the consistent Duenna has finished first, second or third in each of her last five starts.

Duenna, who is out of the Elusive Quality mare Public Protector, has a half-brother (Lot 114) on offer at the upcoming Cape Yearling Sale.
Her sire Fire Away, who had yearlings fetch up to R1 300 000 last year, has three yearlings on offer at the Cape Yearling Sale.
