Fire Away filly named East Cape champion


Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting young stallion Fire Away made news at the recent ROA Eastern Cape Regional Awards. His Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred daughter Luna Halo was crowned the Eastern Cape’s Champion 2YO Filly for the recently concluded 2022-2023 season.An impressive winner on Friday, Luna Halo won four of five starts last season, including the Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery, Listed Dahlia Plate and Listed Lady’s Slipper Stakes.

To date, the Fire Away filly has won five of six starts for her connections.
Out of the Captain Al mare Sun Sentinel, Luna Halo was a R160 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale.

Her sire Fire Away made a cracking start with his first runners last season. The son of War Front’s early winners included not only the aforementioned Luna Halo, but also the G3 WSB Langerman 1-3 finishers My Golly Molly and Zil Moris, G1 Douglas Whyte Thekwini Stakes runner up Egyptian Mau and Listed Storm Bird Stakes runner up Fire ‘N Flames.

Fire Away is also the sire of Mauritania, who recently broke her maiden by over two lengths when victorious at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
