Wilgerbosdrift’s red hot resident sire Flower Alley made it a feature race double at Turffontein on Saturday, when daughters Princess Calla and Opera Glass captured the G1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes and Listed Racehorse Owners Association Spook Express Stakes respectively.
In landing Saturday’s R1.25 million race, Princess Calla became the fifth G1 winner for Flower Alley following the likes of Kentucky Derby winning champion I’ll Have Another and the likes of Bullards Alley, Lilacs And Lace and Lukes Alley.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Princess Calla had been second, third or fourth in seven G1 races prior to her Empress Club win.
Now in the care of Ashley Fortune, four-year-old Princess Calla was given a fine ride by Aldo Domeyer, who kept his mount just off the front running Pretty Betty.
Domeyer sent his mount to the front as the field turned for home, and Princess Calla kept galloping out in front to score by three-parts of a length.
Previously victorious in both the 2020 G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship, 2021 G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes and this season’s G3 Prix Du Cap, Princess Calla took her tally of wins to five in Saturday’s triumph.
Out of the Captain Al mare Princess Royal, Princess Calla was a R600 000 buy from the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
