Strathclyde, a half-brother to Wilgerbosdrift’s multiple G1 winner Alboran Sea, picked up his first Hong Kong success when he scored over 1000m on Derby day at Sha Tin on Sunday. A son of Golden Rose winner Toorak Toff (by Show A Heart), Strathclyde, who is trained by former SA champion Tony Millard, had cost $300 000 from the 2015 Inglis Australian Yearling Sale.
It was just a fourth Hong Kong outing for the 3yo, who had finished fifth at his previous outing.
He was produced by the Toolighttoquit mare Lady’s Light, best known as the dam of former Equus Champion Alboran Sea. Lady’s Light also had a Starspangledbanner colt fetch AUS $540 000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
An outstanding racemare, Alboran Sea won or placed in nine of ten outings, with her victories including the G1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship, G1 Cape Flying Championship and G1 Computaform Sprint. Among the horses she accounted for were multiple G1 winner Carry On Alice, champion sprinter Captain Of All and the G1 winners Normanz, Pine Princess and Willow Magic.
Alboran Sea was South Africa’s Equus Champion 3YO Filly of 2014-2015.
