Wilgerbosdrift’s high-class sires Fire Away and Flower Alley both made their presence felt at Saturday’s East Cape Racing Awards ceremony.
The inform Fire Away is the sire of My Best Shot, who was named Horse Of The Season and Champion 3YO Colt/Gelding for 2024-2025. Trained by Alan Greeff, and bred by Varsfontein Stud, My Best Shot won eight races last season including the Listed Ibhayi Stakes, Listed Bryanston Auctioneers East Cape Guineas and Listed World Sports Betting East Cape Derby. To date, the Fire Away gelding has won ten of 18 starts for earnings of R931 225.
Fire Away’s stablemate, Flower Alley, had two runners pick up awards at Saturday’s ceremony. His son Firealley was named the East Cape’s Champion Older Colt/Gelding and Champion Polytrack Colt/Gelding for 2024-2025. Trained by Jacques Strydom, the Drakenstein Stud bred gelding won both the Listed Betway Algoa Cup and Founders Trophy last season.
Firealley, who is out of the Galileo mare Fire Spinner, has won eight of 54 outings and he has earned R1 127 992 in stakes.
Flower Alley is also the sire of Kabon Kapi, who was crowned the East Cape’s Champion Polytrack Filly for 2024-2025. Trained by Zietsman Oosthuizen, the Wicklow Stud bred Kabon Kapi won five times last season, and she has won seven of 34 starts in total.
Out of the Captain Al mare Skipping Gal, Kabon Kapi is bred on the same cross as champion Princess Calla.
