Fire Away relative popular at Fasig-Tipton

A colt from the same family as Wilgerbosdrift’s promising young sire Fire Away proved very popular at the first session of the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale on Monday evening.

Consigned by Lane’s End, the Into Mischief colt (Hip 102) was knocked down to Spendthrift Farm’s Ned Toffey. The latter signed on behalf of SpendthriftBSW/CrowColtsGroup/Schwartz/Gandharv while purchasing the colt for $1 000 000.

Toffey said of the buy,” AWe are partnering with Mike Moreno, Cypress Creek and St Elias, who was selling the horse is going to stay in for a piece. They are people we have partnered with before and we’re really happy to partner with again. Obviously it gives you a lot of confidence that the breeder wants to stay in. We think this is a really nice horse. We are kind of fond of the sire. That’s just a remarkable female family. He has everything it takes, we just hope he can run”

The pricey colt, the joint third top lot sold at Monday’s session, is out of G3 Turnback The Alarm Handicap victress Teresa Z, a daughter of Smart Strike whose five career wins also included a score in the G3 Monmouth Oaks.
The regally bred Teresa Z is out of the A.P. Indy sired Floral Park Heatherten Stakes winner With Flying Colors, whose own dam is G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner My Flag. The latter in turn was one of three G1 winners produced by unbeaten G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winning champion Personal Ensign –the granddam of Fire Away.

The latter’s outstanding sire War Front also enjoyed success on Monday where War Front yearlings made up to $675 000.

Winner of the G3 Dixie Stakes and over $600 000 in prize money, Fire Away has six lots on offer at the upcoming August Two Year Old Sale, including a half-brother (Lot 9) to graded stakes winners Capoeira and Folk Dance.
