Feature race success for Soft Falling Rain

Wilgerbosdrift’s sadly deceased sire Soft Falling Rain was responsible for a smart looking feature race winner at Turffontein on Saturday, when his son Donderweer captured the World Sports Betting Sophomore 1000 in smart style.

Trained by Paul Matchett, the Pecan Hill Stud bred gelding made it win number three from only six starts when he flew up late to post a half-length win in Saturday’s 1000m contest.
Ridden to victory on Saturday by Jarryd Penny, Donderweer accounted for some smart sorts in Saturday’s feature, with his beaten rivals including G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Basadi Faith.

Out of the Spectrum mare Fashion Queen, the three-year-old Donderweer was a bargain R30 000 buy from the 2018 National 2YO Sale.

His G1 SA Nursery winning sire Soft Falling Rain, who sadly died in 2018 after suffering a severe bout of colic, has made an excellent start with his first runners also including G2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge runner up Gin Fizz, promising filly World Radar, the stakes placed Alramz, and G2 Gagasi FM Debutante winner Montreal Mist.

The latter was named Champion 2YO Filly, for the 2018-2019, at Saturday’s KZN Breeders Awards ceremony which took place at the Fordoun Hotel in Nottingham Road.

One of 16 G1 winners sired by the Danzig horse National Assembly, Soft Falling Rain has 6 lots on offer at January’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
