Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting young stallion Fire Away came up with an eighth first-crop winner on Sunday, when his two-year-old son My Golly Molly broke his maiden in fine style at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. Making his third start, having finished fourth last time out, the Eric Sands trained colt proved too strong for his ten rivals in Sunday’s Cape Racing Juvenile Plate.
Under an inform Sean Veale, My Golly Molly raced four lengths back early on, before moving up powerfully down the inside of the track, and the Fire Away colt pulled clear to win a shade cosily by three-parts of a length.
Bred by Wicklow Stud, My Golly Molly is out of the Western Winter mare Molly R.
The colt was a R200 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale.
Winner of seven races including the G3 Dixie Stakes, Fire Away has made a cracking start with his first two-year-olds this season and currently ranks among the Leading First Season Sires for the 2022-2023 South African racing season.
The son of outstanding sire War Front’s early winners including impressive Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery/Listed Dahlia Plate winner Luna Halo, Listed Storm Bird Stakes runner up Fire ‘N Flames, and the exciting sorts Egyptian Mau, Rani Of Kittur and Zil Moris.
The latter, a good recent winner, holds an entry for the upcoming Listed Somerset 1200, while Fire Away’s debut winner Egyptian Mau has been entered for the G1 Gold Medallion.
A half-brother to G1 winner, and G1 sire, Mr Speaker, Fire Away has a single filly on offer at the 2023 KZN Yearling Sale.
