Wilgerbosdrift’s evergreen sire Flower Alley enjoyed feature race success at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday. His son Otto Luyken showed tremendous courage to win the Listed Pocket Power Stakes (1950m) on Sunday. In landing Sunday’s Listed feature, Otto Luyken, who had finished fourth in the 2024 Pocket Power Stakes, became his G1 Travers Stakes winning sire’s 39th stakes winner.
Hailing from the Crawford yard, five-year-old Otto Luyken was given a superb ride by Luyolo Mxothwa to land Sunday’s R350 000 contest.
Mxothwa bought his mount with a perfectly timed challenge which saw Otto Luyken just get up to beat favourite Garrix by a short-head.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Otto Luyken has won four of 26 outings for R691 224.
Otto Luyken, who had finished runner up in the G3 Legal Eagle Stakes prior to his latest win, is out of the Ideal World mare Laurel Cherry.
His sire Flower Alley has had another good season in 2024-2025 with the son of Distorted Humor also responsible for this season’s Listed Betway Algoa Cup winner Firealley and ListedAllied Steelrode Golden Loom Handicap hero Chyavana.
Famed as the sire of both G1 Kentucky Derby winning champion I’ll Have Another and South African Horse Of The Year Princess Calla, Flower Alley has sired more than 500 winners and his offspring have earned in excess of $48 000 000 in prize money.
