Wilgerbosdrift’s increasingly successful stallion Fire Away had another good payday at Fairview on Friday.
Fire Away’s classy three-year-old son My Best Shot made it a clean sweep of the EC Sophomore Challenge when he romped home to a facile win in Friday’s Listed World Sports Betting East Cape Derby (2400m).
Trained by Alan Greeff, My Best Shot had captured the Listed Ibhayi Stakes (1400m) and Listed Bryanston Auctioneers East Cape Guineas (1600m) in his two starts prior to Friday’s 2400m contest. Under Richard Fourie, My Best Shot was always travelling well, and hit the front 200m from home in the Derby.
From there, the Fire Away gelding pulled clear to score by an emphatic five and a quarter lengths.
In landing the East Cape Derby, My Best Shot made it five wins on the bounce.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, the gelding has won nine of 15 outings.
My Best Shot is out of the Fort Wood mare Gypsy Madonna and is bred on the same Fire Away/Fort Wood cross as exported G3 winner Egyptian Mau.
He is one of several high-class performers to have emerged from Fire Away’s second crop, now three, with this crop having also unleashed the G1 winners Confederate (TAB SA Classic) and Fire Attack (HKJC World Pool Premier’s Champions Challenge).Remarkably, Confederate and Fire Attack ran first and second respectively in the 2025 SA Classic.
