Betway London News Stakes success for Fire Away

Wilgerbosdrift’s increasingly successful sire Fire Away enjoyed a big payday at Turffontein on Saturday.
Fire Away’s top-class son Fire Attack bounced back to winning ways when he captured Saturday’s G3 Betway London News Stakes (1800m).

It was a fine training feat by Fire Attack’s conditioner Alec Laird, who brought Fire Attack to winning ways after a disappointing trip to Cape Town.
Four-year-old Fire Attack was given a well judged ride from Calvin Habib in Saturday’s R400 000 contest.

Habib kept his mount just off the pace early on before bringing Fire Attack with a well timed run close home. The pair kept finding in the closing stages, with Fire Attack staying on gamely to hold off a fast finishing The Ultimate King and win by a neck.

Bred by Ndoro Stud,  the chestnut races for Gary Basel, Grant Cornwall, Lance Clark and Canine Solutions.

The Fire Away colt, who is out of the Mambo In Seattle mare Bonnie Beers, was a R450 000 buy from the 2023 National Yearling Sale.

Fire Attack has won four of 17 starts, with the colt having also landed the 2025 G1 HKJC World Pool Premier’s Champions Challenge and 2024 G2 TAB SA Nursery.
His inform sire Fire Away had also enjoyed success at Fairview one day earlier, when Fire Away gelding Ingqwele won the fifth race at Fairview.

A son of outstanding sire War Front and grandson of unbeaten champion Personal Ensign, Fire Away has ten lots on offer at the Cape Yearling Sale, and nine lots on sale at the Premier Yearling Sale.
