FEATURE RACE GLORY FOR TROPHY WIFE

The Wilgerbosdrift bred Trophy Wife took her earnings to just under R2 000 000 with a gutsy victory in the Hollywood Bets Queen Palm Stakes at Greyville on Saturday.

The five-year-old daughter of Tiger Ridge, trained by Sean Tarry and owned by Chris Van Niekerk, ran on strongly under Lyle Hewitson to score by half a length in the 2400m contest.

Trophy Wife, who was conceding 9kgs to the runner up Forbidden Duel, was trying the 2400m trip for a first time on Saturday, but this proved no issue for the gallant mare, who has now seven wins to her name (Trophy Wife having won or placed 26 of 33 outings).

A daughter of Wilgerbosdrift’s late sire Tiger Ridge, Trophy Wife (who had run second to five time G1 winner Carry On Alice over 1100m a few starts back) had previously won the G2 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes (back in 2015) and ran second to champion Majmu in the 2015 G1 L Jaffee Empress Club Stakes.

The Queen Palm was another feather in the cap of Tiger Ridge, also responsible this season for G1 HSH Princess Charlene Of Monaco Empress Club Stakes winner Nother Russia, and the very promising 2yo fillies Meryl and Folk Dance –both of whom hold entries in the G1 Thekwini Stakes at the end of the month.

Trophy Wife is out of the Goldmark mare My Squeeza, victorious in the Listed (now G1) Woolavington Stakes and runner up in the G1 Garden Province Stakes.
